Last November, Facebook had announced it was launching its own version of e-mail called Facebook Messages that would combine SMS, chat, messaging, and e-mail in one interface. They couldn’t use the facebook.com domain since that was exclusively dealt to Facebook employees so they went for fb.com instead. According to Reuters, the American Farm Bureau Federation, a non-profit, sold the domain for $8.5 million to Facebook earlier that year. The price, more than 42 times the amount spent to acquire Facebook.com, is quite a pricey tag, but nothing compared to what they might earn from using this new messaging system.
More recently, the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards that happened last Sunday awarded The Social Network with four trophies. Mark Zuckerberg often criticized the movie for portraying the early years of Facebook as a distortion of the truth. However, the success of the movie has reinforced Facebook’s place in our cultural realm and has only promoted its pertinence in how we communicate.

- Best Picture, Drama — Won
The Golden Globes are often seen as a prelude to the Academy Awards and with this great success, many have predicted a similar outcome for The Social Network during the upcoming ceremony.
