Marketing Friends and Influencing Links

In the cooperate world, competition is the drive for success. Competition is always fierce so it is easy for companies to get protective with their products. Usually it is common for business to promote their products and only their products. When have you ever seen a target special in a Wal-Mart catalogue or a Burger King menu at a McDonalds? It just doesn’t happen in the regular market because companies gain no benefit by promoting for their competitor. Fundamentally this makes sense for us because we are so competitive in nature. It’s also proven to be successful in the traditional marketing aspect. On the web however, it’s a whole new world. A company that promotes other links in their content is actually more successful than those that don’t. This is due to a concept called backlinking, which is branch off of an Internet marketing strategy called SEO.

Back linking is an Internet marketing strategy that has proven to work very well. It is a two-way road where both links involved gain benefits from each other. The process involves posting the links of other related articles in your content in order to improve page rankings on search engines. Search engines look to see if a website has useful information that it deems is related to the keywords. The more relative links, the higher percent that the page will show up. The other side of backlinking though involves posting your link on various blogs, articles, and comments in hopes of getting referrals from that particular site. With this mind, you need to be open to making friends with the competition.

One of the best ways to get link referrals is to have a mutual link exchange with other sites. It’s not good to be stingy where the mindset of business is that we are the only information out there. With the World Wide Web, there are millions of places where people can get the same type of information. It’s all about improving the frequency that your information gets displayed. Think about the competition as friends not necessarily competitors. Both parties benefit because both will get more traffic (direct and indirect). So find a friend and simply ask them for a link exchange.

One thing to always be mindful though (in any internet marketing strategy), it is essential to have good content. A blogger or competitor won’t want to exchange links if your content isn’t valuable. Make people want to broadcast your link to all their customers and this is only possible with compelling stories.
